What Is a Near-Death Experience?

Near-Death Experiences are the time from death on earth — from heart attacks, auto vehicle accidents, industrial events, and more — and being resurrected with a pulse again. In what can be, at times, a four-minute visit to the other side of the veil, or as many call it "Home," a person's life is fundamentally changed.

An NDE is an individual's experience after they technically die, regardless of the cause, and are eventually resuscitated — for example, through the use of an automated external defibrillator. During this gap period, they are dead.

Estimates suggest that roughly 5% to 23% of the population have had a near-death experience, translating to tens of millions of people in the U.S. and hundreds of millions globally.

What NDErs Experience

While they are dead, they may experience some or all of the following phenomena in spirit form. This is a very condensed version of the list — you will find much more in the book.

  • Hovering over the local scene of their death
  • Traveling beyond the local scene, even through structures
  • Entering a tunnel in which they travel at a high rate of speed
  • Experiencing a life review that includes every aspect of their life, judging themselves
  • While traveling through the tunnel, seeing a small, distant, white light at the end
  • Experiencing a total immersion of love from the light, unlike any love on earth
  • After the tunnel, traveling to any place they can think of — all travel takes mere moments, even across the universe
  • Interacting with deceased family members, friends, pets, or guides
  • Family members and friends are consistently reported to appear to be in their mid-30s
  • Seeing and experiencing vibrant colors that do not exist on earth and are not part of our visual palette
  • Realizing that life on the other side of the veil has no time — time is irrelevant; past, present, and future are all one
  • Having the ability to see in 360 degrees
  • Receiving what many describe as a download of everything ever known — from the universe to space-time and even past lives — most of which is not remembered upon returning to earthly life
  • Realizing and accepting that this is "home," more so than the concept of home on earth
  • Being told they must return because it is not yet their time and they have more to do — the majority of NDErs do not want to return to earthly life
  • Feeling momentary anger upon resuscitation, typically directed at the people they first see after returning
  • Realizing, once back in earthly life, that they had wanted to stay despite having people who love and depend on them — babies, children, spouses — and often feeling guilty
  • Becoming aware that what seemed to have lasted hours, days, or weeks actually occurred during only a few minutes of resuscitation

The consistency of these experiences drove the development of a grading process, resulting in a numerical scale — currently based on 19 phenomena — developed by Dr. Bruce Greyson, sometimes referred to as the father of NDE research.

A foundational account

The First Gold Nugget

This testimony was the very first time I had found what became my first gold nugget — a missing puzzle piece on my long journey. It rejuvenated me. I knew I could use it. I kept it close to my heart while I looked for how I could use it. I kept searching.

Two doctors were standing next to my body and one near my head. They were all women. 'Oh, is that me there?' I thought indifferently to myself, 'And what are they doing to me?' And then that became uninteresting. I was much more interested in the fact that I could see through walls. An ambulance drove up, also uninteresting. 'Well, well, this building is made from logs,' I exclaimed to myself. It amazed me that I could see the logs because the wall was plastered on both sides. Then I looked through to the other side of the wall, and I saw a hospital ward.

Because the NDEr's experience is so impactful and immersive, many have difficulty transitioning back to life in physical form. The book contains examples of actual NDEr testimony describing many of these phenomena, along with one full quote of each event and a description of related experiences.
